Chapter Twenty-One

Charlotte went straight to her room. She tugged on the drawer of her writing desk so hard it fell open, spilling papers and quills and sealing wax all over the floor. She grabbed a single paper and left the rest.

Her Majesty Queen Anne Boleyn

The Lion at Willowkeep, Kent

July 1810

Dear Anne,

I know you didn’t have an easy go of life. I’m sorry; I truly am. You were wronged by your family, your husband, and your country. But I am in dire need here.

The London men are telling me I can’t stay at Willowkeep unless I marry. You and I both know that cannot be.

You had the power to turn the heart of a king and change the fate of England forever. I know you can help me.

I s’pose you can’t do all the work though, so I’ve put my mind to what can be done, and I have two options. The first, I die, not too painfully, I hope. The second, I haven’t figured out yet. I can’t leave my sister alone, so that rules out the first.

It’s up to you now.
